Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was my intro to Metal Gear. Thankfully I didn’t hit my head too many times, and the story isn’t as confusing to jump into as I was told. Lots of nouns, lots of named events, but in Rising, action’s the focus – so let’s talk big revengeance.

Rising is very good – yeah it’s a screamer, it’s got all kinds of annoying little bits, but they’re annoying in the moment. It’s the kind of game, like Ninja Gaiden, that’ll make you want to do better. It’s called self-care sweetie, and it starts with the parry button.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is the second metal gear game to feature Raiden as a playable character but it represents many firsts for the series. It’s the first game not to be developed by Kojima Productions or directed by Hideo. It’s the first to truly focus on action and it’s the first spinoff, having nothing to do with Snake and little to do with the series storyline.

It was a huge gamble that almost didn’t pay off and it was even cancelled at one point. So, bearing all this in mind, what’s Metal Gear Rising Revengeance like to play in 2021 and what are your best options for doing so? In this review/retrospective, I’ll cover its troubled development, its design, the DLC and if it’s still worth your time.
